CAF Museum Receives TravelBlazer Award
Peachtree City is proud of its World War II history.
It is on display every day at the Commemorative Air Force (CAF) Airbase Georgia Warbird Museum, one of nine sites on the Georgia World War II Heritage Trail, a new program that links important sites across the state to honor something we will never forget – Georgia’s incredible contributions to the war effort.
The Heritage Trail
which includes the CAF museum, was recently awarded the TravelBlazers Award by the Georgia Association of Convention and Visitors Bureaus at the association’s annual conference in Savannah.
“This tourism award recognizes a variety of new destination attractions and innovative ideas that have resulted from the creativity, passion and teamwork of community leaders from various city, county, travel and business/industry sectors,” said Jay Markwalter, GACVB executive director. “These new projects make a significant impact on the economic development of the community and enhance the vitality of a region.”
The Flying Museum
is a collection of seven still-operating WWII-era aircraft, some of which are available to experience in flight. The museum has long been an advocate of teaching the history of WWII and hosts WWII Heritage Days, the oldest and largest WWII-themed event in Georgia. It has been designated a Top-20 Event by the Southeast Tourism Society. This year’s Heritage Days will be on Saturday, Oct. 9. Don’t miss the chance to get up close, and maybe even inside, the warbirds that helped America lead the Allies to victory in World War II.
Although the museum is currently closed to the public, it will open in the fall and we are excited to enjoy the beautiful fall weather in Peachtree City while we celebrate The Greatest Generation and their contributions to American and world history.
For a little history on the museum
The CAF Airbase Georgia was founded in Peachtree City in 1987 and is one of the largest units of the Commemorative Air Force. It flies seven WWII aircraft, including a P-51 Mustang, an FG-1D Corsair and rare types such as the SBD Dauntless dive bomber and P-63A Kingcobra. The nonprofit organization is composed of 400 members and relies on contributions of time and money to carry out its mission. This is a fantastic organization that can make use of your donations of time and/or money.
To learn more about the air base and the museum, go to www.airbasegeorgia.org, and don’t miss your chance to see the planes in person this October.
