Barbecue in Georgia is older than Georgia itself. Join us as we welcome Dr. James "Trae" Welborn III, Professor of History at Georgia College & State University, as he shares the long multicultural history of this evolving culinary tradition from its earliest indigenous settlement through the European colonial era and across Georgia’s 250-year statehood. By showing how barbecue reveals the state’s inherently diverse and complex history, we will find ample food for thought on foodways studies and their value in understanding who we were, and how that informs both who we are and who we will be. These stories are Georgia stories, and Georgia stories are American stories. So what better way to mark the 250th anniversary of the United States than to savor one of the original 13 states’ culinary cornerstones: barbecue?
Ticketed attendees will received one (1) free BBQ sandwich to enjoy during the presentation.
